An all Italian Affair
'The BIS is the Whippet, Beseeka Knight Errant of Silkstone'. It was in 1980
when the judge Paolo Ciceri spoke these words at the end of the World Dog Show
that took place in Italy in 1980. In that year the entries were 4,330. No article
had been published in the ENCI official magazine, I Nostri Cani.
Since that day the World event has travelled around the world, flying from a continent to another one. A few years ago the FCI decided to offer Italy a second opportunity to host this great show. Twenty years have past from that day when Mr. Ciceri said those words.
The year 2000! The day seemed so far away. The first question for ENCI had been: 'where are we going to organise this event?' The city had to be in the north of Italy to be close to the other countries. It had to have a great exhibition area and a huge parking space to host the exhibitors and all the entries. During the last twenty years the number of entries has increased a lot. The world event that took place in Helsinki in 1998, the greatest one until now, had almost 20,000 entries, a real record! The event and the organisation should not be underestimated. Three names had been mentioned: Milan, Genoa and Verona. After a few months they decided for Milan: located to the North of Italy, with a huge hall and parking place. The count down started for this city.
Welcome
According to the statistic it has been the second greatest show after that one
organised by the Finnish Kennel Club in Helsinki two years ago.
The event started on Thursday 22nd June when the ENCI president together with the FCI president, Mr. Hans Mller, and the FCI delegate, Mrs Carla Molinari, gave the welcome to the exhibitors.
The programme followed this agenda. On Thursday three groups were exposed the Spitz and primitives type (gr. 5), the Scenthounds (gr. 6) and the Sighthounds (gr. 10); on Friday three groups Terriers (gr. 3), the Pointing dogs (gr. 7) and the Retrievers, flushing dogs and water dogs (gr. 8), on Saturday three groups the Sheepdogs and cattledogs (gr. 1), Dachshund (gr. 4) and the Companions and Toy (gr. 9); on Sunday only one the Pinscher and schnauzer type, molossians and Swiss mountain and cattledogs (gr. 2).
During this show the following titles were distribute in this way: the 'World Champion 2000' title was given to the male and the bitch that had received the CACIB; the 'Young World Champion 2000' title was given to the best male and female (qualification 'excellent' entered in the junior class (9-18 months old); the 'World Hope 2000' were assigned to the best male and bitch (qualification 'Very promising') entered in the Puppy class; the CAC winners received the 'Enci champion of the Year 2000' title.
Group 1:
There were 1616 entries. The most numerous were the Collie Rough and the German
Shepherd Dog (134) (BOB Saskia von Arminius) followed by the Briard (124) and
the Bobtail (104) (BOB Drover's Roll those Dice). The less numerous breeds were
the Karst Shepherd dog (3), the Croat Shepherd dog, the Mudi and the Bouvier
des Ardennes (1). The last one is a Belgian breed recognised by FCI but it can
not compete neither for the CACIB and CAC nor for the BOB because it is considered
a suspended breed. Among the breeds of this group there are the Co de
Fila de S. Miguel and the Australian Shepherd that are breeds provisionally
accepted by FCI and can not compete for the CACIB.
The Rough collie was judged by two English judges Mrs Liz Cartledge who judged the females and Mrs Audrey Chatfield. Mrs Cartledge said, 'Quality was very high. I liked a lot my RCACIB, a blue merle, but when she had to compete she was tired. A few subject were too fat and the coat was not so perfect, but it is not the right season. I had lovely juniors.' The BOB was assigned by Mrs Audrey Chatfield to Lakefield Love is in the Air.
The Briard BOB was chosen by Mr. Rainer Vuorinen (FIN). 'I judged the open, intermediate, working and champion classes. The level was very high. In Italy this breed is very well bred. The BOB, Laysa Minelli della Val Foglia, is an Italian subject.
Mr. G. Mansecal judged the Beauceron (48). 'There were many subjects but there were not many French subjects. The level was not very high. The coat was not very beautiful; the muzzles were too sharp, the movement was not always correct. In this great group I had five or six wonderful males. In a WDS the level should be higher.' The BOB was Matcho du Relais des Ecuries (F).
Mrs Josephina Gomez Toldra (E) judged the Catalan Shepherd dog (27). 'The BOB, Tirant des Pastorets de Pla (E) is a really wonderful subject. The level was good but the breeders should not forget that even if it is a country breed they must not forget to take care to the coat. I also judged the Australian Cattle dog (18). The level in this breed was fantastic. I had the opportunity to judge it in Brussels and in European show but I have not seen such a high quality. I gave the BOB to Cattlefarm's Shameless.'
Champion
In the BOG the Bobtail, Ch. Drover's Roll Those Dice, won the first place followed
by the Bearded Collie, Ch. Offenbach de Chester, and by the Saarloos Wolfhound,
Tango Timber Eskalupa. The Bobtail comes from Sweden and is four years old.
She is an Int. Nordic champion, Top dog 1999 all breeds. She has won many BIS.
Her father is from USA but lives in Sweden, he mother is Finnish. The kennel
has the affix 'Dizznyz'. The second is a two years old French dog, his parents
are both French and is a French and Int. champion and has won many BIS. The
third subject won the World BOG in Helsinki two years ago.
Group 2:
This group was the biggest one of the show with 4000 entries. In Italy this
group has increased in the last four years. There were many breeds with more
than 150 entries. The most numerous breeds were the Rottweiler (326). They were
judged in four rings. The BOB, Onex vom Schwaiger, was chosen by Mr. Ottomar
Vogel (D) who breeds Rottweiler with the affix 'vom Haus Winter'. The Dobermann
in total were 368 judged in five rings. Unusual was the high number of entries
of the Dogo argentino (236) the BOB was Talisman de la Vieja Diana (RA). The
Cane Corso (200) has found many fans. It is still considered a breed provisionally
accepted and can not compete for the CACIB. The BOB was Cheno (I).
One of the most popular Italian breeds is the Mastino Napoletano (150), judged by three people. Mr. Giuseppe Alessandra judged the adult bitches and assigned the BOB. 'The quality was excellent in the champion and open class where I could see a very high level that I did not see since many years. The BOB, Urania del Castellaccio (I), is an example of type for her construction and movement.'
The Dogue de Bordeaux (132) were judged by Mr. Raymond Triquet (F) and by Mr. Luis Pinto Texeira (P). The last one assigned the BOB. 'In the male the quality was medium high. The best dog in the champion class was an outstanding dog with full of power, a real molossian. It came from Moscow. The BOB, Mistarl de la Maison de Hollande (NL), came from Holland it was a super dog with an outstanding head.' Mr. L. Teixeira also judged the Great Japanese Dog. This breed entered in the official list of FCI at the beginning of this year and it is the first time that it could compete for the World champion title. 'The entries were only 6. The BOB, Kapture the Magic at Wicca (S), is a beautiful bitch in type with a fantastic movement.'
Difference
The BOG Winner has been the Neapolitan Mastiff, Urania del Castellaccio, followed
by the Russian Black Terrier, Ch. Kris, and the Central Asia Ovtcharka, Ondina
del Fiume Bianco (I). The winner has always been BOB and is considered one of
the best subjects of its breed.
Group 3:
The Scottish Terrier were judged by UK 'ex-pat' Paul Stanton (S). 'It had been
very difficult to judge because the level was very high. Among all these subjects
you could see that there is a difference to breed according to the country.
They all had a good temperament. The best male was wheaten. In the young and
puppy class the level was super. It is a good sign for the future.' The BOB
is O'Cun Problem du Moulin de MacGregor (F).
The Cairn Terriers were 97 and judged by Mr. Dan Ericcson (S). 'I hoped to find a better level. Most of them were too long so the shape was not correct. I had only a few good subjects.'
The BOG has been won by the American Staffordshire Terrier, Mein Staffi Xidorf (I), followed by the Fox Terrier Wire, Ch. Dartline Timeless (S), and by the Kerry blue Terrier, Ch. Balboa Elcid (I). The BOG winner is four years old and is following the palmares of his father, the multi champion MeinStaffi Ishtar. Xidorf is an Italian, international, club '98 and '99 champion and Top Dog 1999. He is waiting to become S. Marino and club champion 2000. The third subject is a relatives of the BOG winner at the World Show 1996. It has been shown in England and presented by Don Munro.
Group 4:
The Dachshund was the greatest group. They were 682. The quality in the average
was high. The most numerous were Dachshunds Wire Haired (126) (BOB, Zack della
Val Vezzeno), the Dachshunds Smooth-Haired (122) (BOB Ultra vom Golf - H) and
the Miniature Dachshunds Wire Haired (101) (BOB Marcus delle Magiche Emme -
I).
The BOG was won by the Dachshund Smooth Haired, Ultra vom Golf, followed by a Kaninchen Dachshund Long Haired, Ch. Antonkicsinko della Canterana (I), and by Zack della Val Vezzeno (I). At the European show'99, in Tulln, a relative of the BOG winner, Quasar vom Golf won the BOG and it is also not the first time that the kennel della Canterana won a place in the BOG.
Groupe 8:
The most numerous were the Siberian Husky (218), the Akita Inu (156), the Samoyed
(110) (BOB, Clan's Imperiawite - I) and the Alaskan Malamute (109) (BOB Rain
of Isy Mountain - RCH).
Mr. Kamisato Hiroshi (J) judged the Akita bitches. 'I am very happy to see that the two breeds have been divided. The quality is good but before judging I was worried to see both in the same ring. The quality can be improved. I did not judge the males but I saw that their level is superior.'
Mr. Paul Stanton (S) judged the Siberian Husky bitches. 'Most of them were changing the coat. The level is high but the quality is decreasing. I judged very much the movement. The front angulations should be improved. I like balanced movement. In many breeds we see high angulations behind and not in front.' Ms. Kathleen Kanzler (USA) judged the male classes of the Siberian Husky and the BOB: 'The level is decreasing even if it remains very high, the coat was not always perfect but it is not the right season. I gave the BOB to a Allidan'n Darduan Turn the Page (E)'
Mr. Dan Ericcson (S) judged the miniature spitz. 'Many had problem in the group, the type was very mixed and also the sizes. The movement was not typical. But I was happy of my BOB.'
The Chow Chow were very numerous. Mr. Uwe Fischer (D) judged them. 'I had many subject but the quality was not so extraordinary. I saw problems in the coat and in the eyes that were almost covered.' The BOB is Darksideofthemoon dei Leoni Imperiali (I).
Numerous
The BOG winner was the Basenji, Zindika's Johnny come Grently (USA), the RBOG
the Siberian Husky,Allidan'n Darduan Turn the Page, and third the Miniature
Spitz, Ch. Abishag of Lenette (SLO). The Basenji is five years old and it comes
from an American kennel. He is USA and Canadian champion. He was presented by
his handler, Ms Erin Roberts.
In the next group most of the French breeds missed. Except for a few breeds where the entries were more then 80 most of them had less then ten subjects. The most numerous were the Dalmatian (149), the Beagle (91) and the Basset hound (88). The less numerous were the Franais tricolore, the Sabueso Espaol and the Jugoslovenski Trobojnic Gonic (1). There were also breeds very difficult to see as the Drever (3) or the Balcanian Scent hound (4).
The Beagle have been judged by Mr. Ernesto Capra. 'I had many dogs coming from different countries but all of high quality. I gave almost all excellent. The BOB was Cheerful Covery of Dynamite's Gentry (D).
Dr. Mario Quadri judged the Segugio italiano (52). 'The level of the Rough variety is high in the expressiveness, in the construction, in the temperament. We can say that the level of this Italian breed is good. More precarious was the situation of the smooth one because in the South Italy they crossbreed it with other hunting dogs. This is not good for this breed and I would suggest taking a firm position to save the true Segugio italiano smooth. The BOB (rough) was Pippo di Pompiano (I) and the BOB (smooth) was Maior (I)
The main ring was the most interesting for people, and also for the judges, to see unknown breeds. Mr. Quadri judged the BOG and said: 'I had many beautiful subjects. I chose the Petit Basset Griffon Venden, Plushcourt Coco Chanel (GB) for the harmony of the construction and for her elegance and typicalness. Second was a Basset Hound, Swede Sun's Konrad (S) because he was a strong dog with a beautiful movement, thing very important because it is still a hunting breed. First was the Segugio italiano wire haired, Pippo di Pompiano, because he is one of the best subjects that we have seen in the last ten years.'
The BOG winner was the Bracco Italiano, Giaccherebbe dell'Angelo del Summano (I), followed by the English Pointer, Fast (I), and by the Irish Red Setter, Bayroff di Casa Bertolini (I). The winner was an Italian dog and is considered one of the best Bracco Italiano of the last ten years. He had won the BIS at the Milan International last January.
Group 7:
The most numerous were the Labrador (275), the Golden Retriever (242), the English
cocker (179) and the American Cocker (104). The less numerous were the German
spaniel (1), the American Water spaniel (2) and the Dutch spaniel (2).
Mr. François Richard judged the English cocker males (95). 'I had exceptional classes. I was surprise to see so few problems in the bite. They were all well presented with a wonderful coat. In the subjects coming from the Nordic countries I saw a type different from the English one. They are stronger dogs with a particular coat. It is longer on the body. In the working class I had wonderful subjects. The first four subject could all compete for the first place. That is extremely rare to find it in this class.' The BOB was assigned by Mr. Giobatta Tabò (I) to Quettanede Keeping Faith (H).
One of the Italian breeds that is becoming very popular is the Lagotto Romagnolo. This breed is the youngest one together with the Cane corso. It is still considered a breed provisionally accepted by FCI and so it is excluded from the CACIB. He can become a national champion but not international. This breed has been judged by Mr. Mario Quadri. 'This breed is improving in typicalness but especially in the temperament. I had 55 entries. There were good and excellent subjects. We must take care to the size. The are subjects too small or too high but always in the standard.' The breeders of the Lagotto Romagnolo would like to obtain as soon as possible the possibility to compete also for the CACIB and it seemed that during this WDS they have received a positive answer by the FCI according them a CACIB (in examination). They have also asked the ENCI to submit this breed to a working trial. The Lagotto Romagnolo was at the origin a dog for truffles.' The BOB was assigned to Silù (I)
The BOG winner was the Flat coated retriever, Almanza I'm on Fire (S), followed by the Golden Retriever, Ch. Lorinford Harleguin (F), and by the Perro de Agua Espaol, Ch. Cheto (E). The Flat coated retriever is five years old, has a leaver coat. He is a Swedish and Norwegian champion. He has won many BIS. He belongs to the Almanza Kennel who started to breed Flat coated in 1981.
Groupe 9:
The most numerous breeds were the family of the Poodle (336), the Mops (140),
the Shih-Tzu (112), the Tibetan Terrier (100).
The Poodles were judged by several judges according to the size and the colour. The miniature poodles were judged by Mr. Paul Stanton (S). 'The level was not so good as I expected. There were problems in the back angulations. The breeders should not only thing to the coat and to the presentation but also to the construction. 'The toys have been judged by Mr. Valerio Nataletti (I). 'The level was very high, I gave only two very good. The tails in this size are still short. The black class was exceptional. They are toy but without the presence of nanism. The best two subjects, male and female, are both white and this does not happened very often to have beautiful white toy.' The best subject had been a white Standard Poodle, Ch. Lapponia's Ratkim.
Mrs Renée Sporre Willes (S) judged the Mups males. 'Very few absentees. The first three subjects in each class were really wonderful. My CACIB, Rassel (I) was a wonderful subject. The BOB was assigned by Dr. Paolo Dondina who gave it to him. Most of the subject had the right size, the right construction; they were very close to the standard.
Ms. Leyla Rebelo judged the Lhasa Apso (73). 'The level of the breed was wonderful. The champion class male has been the most difficult in my life to judge because the level was extremely high. I saw only a few problems in the bite.' The BOB was El Minja's Thang Ka.
Mr. Rafael de Santiago (PR) judged the Tibetan Terrier(100). 'The quality was very high, in a few dogs I can say exceptional especially in the champion class males and females. The champions were closed to the perfection: excellent heads and beautiful movement. The puppy class was also very good. The future is magnificent. The only thing I would take care is the front shoulders a few were to straight and so the subjects tend to move in a short base.' The BOB was Char sur American Sunshine (NL).
No problem
The Long Haired Chihuahua (63) were judged by Mr. Dan Ericcson (S). 'They need
more temperament in the ring. It is a small breed but the temperament must be
stronger. The heads were correct and there was no problem in the bite. I saw
not correct top lines. It is a bad period for the coat. The BOB, Stardust di
San Giminiano (Fin) was a wonderful dog. The level of the puppies was very high.'
The BOG winner was the white Standard poodle, Ch. Lapponia's Ratkim (FIN), followed by the Chihuahua, Ch. Pancho Villa II, and by the French Bouledogue, C. Cheto (E). The winner is four years old and is an international Finnish, Norway, Swedish champion and no. 3 dog of the year in 1998. He has won many BIS and a special BIS only for Poodle.
Group 10:
All the breeds of this group were present also the last recognised by FCI, the
Polish Greyhound (or Chart Polski) where the entries were only seven. The most
numerous were the Afghan hound (128) and the Borzoi (103)
The Afghan hounds were judged by Mr. Norman Corbet Huidobro (E) and Dr. Paolo Dondina. the first one judged the bitches. 'I had a very nice top winning bitch. My CACIB, Tryst of Grandeur (DK) was a fantastic subject with the good quality of a champion. The CAC, Katzkatis overnight Express, is also a wonderful subject but still too young.' The second one judged the male and assigned the BOB to the male Ch. Kingsleah blue star.
Mr. Juan Gascon Rabasseda judged the Whippet (96). 'The quality was very high and among the excellent all could become a World champion but I had to choose. I know that there cannot be a perfect dog but the winners a very close. I really gave many excellent.' The BOB is Rivarco Opera Prima (I).
Mr. Franco Ferrari judged the Deerhound (26). 'Many entries. The quality was very high, they were all very well built and very close to the standard.' The BOB was Beloved Bonfire Bevis of Dirty Mind (NL).
The Saluki (89) have been judged by Ms Renée Sporre Willes. 'Quite good level. Lovely heads, unfortunately quite a few were without coat and had trouble in the movement. I would like to see a more typical one, more elastic. I am extremely pleased by my winner male.' The BOB is Gejran Dorr e Dorran (CH)
Dr. Dondina judged the BOG: 'It was a fantastic group, the quality was super. The third was a Deerhound, Beloved Bonfire Bevis of Dirty Mind (NL). She had a wonderful head and top line. The second was an Irish Wolfhound, Files Fionnmae (NL). He had a wonderful construction and exceptional head. The winner, an Afghan hound, Ch. Kingsleah Blue Star (S) is a super dog. According to me it is one of the best dog I have the honour to judge. Exceptional condition, great personality and at least a male with a masculine head.' The winner is a five years male. He is a Swedish dog. He is Swedish, New-Zealand and Australian champion. He has won many BIS and in April 2000 he has won the World Congress Show in Sidney. He was the best male among 120 exhibits. The breeder had her first litter in 1976 and had the affix 'Kingsleah'.
Four BEST to conclude the show
During these four days the judged Mrs Sonia Falletti has selected the best junior
handlers. On the last day before the BIS she proclaimed the best junior handler
of the show: Caterina Molinari (P) with a Whippet who beat many other junior
handlers arrived from every parts of the world to compete for this title.
At the end of Sunday took place three BIS. The first was for the best young dog. The best World junior 2000 is the Shih-tzu, Patchouli Parfum d'Orient d'Oja Shivo (F), the RBIS, the Dobermann, Brahms vom Hanseaten, and third the Irish Wolfhound, Maximilian Fionnmae (NL). The winner was 18 months old and was presented by the breeder of his father. This subject has won the junior BIS 2000 in Brussels and was the best dog of Tibet in open class in St. Brieux in France. His mother is English and is a pluri champion and best Shih-tzu 1998, his father was best dog in France in 1999.
A special BIS was planned only for Italian breeds. The best of each Italian breed were present in the main ring. The Italian judge, Mr. Cavalchini, selected the best three, and wrote their breeds on a paper and closed the envelope to avoid that his choice could influence the judgement of Mr. Perricone who had to choose the BEST of the show. After the ten Italian stars entered in the main ring the ten BOG winner received with thundering applause. Finished to judge also Mr. Perricone wrote his three BEST on a paper. The winners of the Italian BIS have been the Bracco Italiano, Giaccherebbe dell'Angelo del Summano, followed by the Mastino Napoletano, Pupetta, and by the Bergamasco Shepherd dog, Ch. Wutai dei Lupercalli.
The final BIS judged by Mr. Mario Perricone has been won by
the Bracco italiano, followed by the Poodle and the Afghan hound. When we asked
the opinion of the judged he answered, 'I am so moved, sorry....' and then going
in front of the winner he said '... I would like to dedicate this victory to
Paolino Ciceri and also Pupa Ciceri who died recently' (Paolino Ciceri was an
allround judge, father of the Bracco Italiano, Pupa was his daughter who died
a couple of months ago). A few seconds of emotion followed these words before
hearing a thundering applause and with this the light of this world show moved
from the Italian flag to the Portuguese one who will host the next edition of
this mega show: The first of the new century the first edition where also dogs
coming from England will be able to participate.
