The following is the Kennel Club definition of classes at championship and open shows held in Britain. |

Minor Puppy |
| |
For dogs of six and not exceeding nine calendar months of age on the first day of the show. |

Puppy |
| |
For dogs of six and not exceeding twelve calendar months of age on the first day of the show. |
| |
Junior |
| |
For dogs of six and not exceeding eighteen calendar months of age on the first day of the show. |
| |
Beginners |
| |
For owner, handler or exhibit not having won a first prize at any show. |
| |
Maiden |
| |
For dogs that have not won a Challenge Certificate or a First Prize at an open or championship show (some classes excepted).. |
| |
Novice |
| |
For dogs that have not won a Challenge Certificate or three or more First Prizes at open and championship shows (some classes excepted). |
| |
Tyro |
| |
For dogs that have not won a Challenge Certificate or five or more First Prizes at open or championship shows (some classes excepted). |
| |
Debutant |
| |
For dogs that have not won a Challenge Certificate or a First Prize at a championship show (some classes excepted). |
| |
Undergraduate |
| |
For dogs that have not won a Challenge Certificate or three or more First Prizes at championship shows (some classes excepted). |

Graduate |

For dogs that have not won a Challenge Certificate or four or more First Prizes at championship shows in graduate, post-graduate, minor limit, mid limit, limit and open classes. |

Post-Graduate |

For dogs that have not won a Challenge Certificate or five or more First Prizes at championship shows in post-graduate, minor limit, mid limit, limit and open classes. |

Minor Limit |
| |
For dogs that have not won two Challenge Certificates or three or more First Prizes in all at championship shows in minor limit, mid limit, limit and open classes, confined to the breed, at shows where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed. |

Mid Limit |
| |
For dogs that have not won three Challenge Certificates or five or more First Prizes in all at championship shows in mid limit, limit and open classes, confined to the breed, at shows where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed. |
| |
Limit |
| |
For dogs that have not won three Challenge Certificates under three different judges or seven or more First Prizes in all at championship shows in limit and open classes, confined to the breed, at shows where Challenge Certificates were offered for the breed. |
| |
Open |
| |
For all dogs of the breed for which the class is provided and eligible for entry at the show. |
| |
Veteran |
| |
For dogs not less than seven years of age on the first day of the show. |

The Commonwealth system follows this pattern quite closely, although classes are fewer. The American system is simpler and is usually restricted to minor puppy, puppy, bred-by-exhibitors, American-bred, open and championship classes. At shows organised under FCI rules the subdivisions usually comprise puppy, junior open, working and champion. |
