In Cold Blood

Please read on……
Have you ever wondered what happens to greyhounds before and after their racing life? Here are just some of the facts about the greyhound racing industry –

  • Greyhound puppies are routinely killed before the age of 1 year if they fail to meet racing standards - this is approx. about one third (10,000) every year
  • Most greyhounds are retired before the age of 3yrs - the majority of these are then abandoned or killed
  • Around 30,000 greyhounds are registered every year for racing in Britain and Ireland
  • In one year alone, 55 greyhounds were used for vivisection in the UK
  • Thousands of greyhounds have been found disposed of in the most barbaric ways, some of these include –
  • Hanging from trees - Shot and drowned - Battered to death with a shovel - Thrown from fast moving cars on motorways
Abandoned on wasteground where they are later found dead from starvation
  • In Spain it is the centuries’– old tradition of hunters (galgueros) to hang, torture and maroon their greyhounds at the end of the 4 month hunting/coursing season in mid-January each year – EVERY YEAR
  • Greyhounds in Spain are kept in diabolical conditions – confined in cages 1 metre square for 23 hours a day. They are starved, dehydrated, pumped full of drugs & are left to suffer with untreated injuries
  • The Federacion Espanola de Galgos in Madrid is a member of the World Greyhound Racing Federation, with Britain, Ireland, USA & Australia. This federation has shown little interest in the barbaric treatment of greyhounds

HOW YOU CAN HELP

  • Rehome a rescue greyhound – they make wonderful, loving, gentle, lazy pets that require little exercise, are great with children and like to sleep a lot!!

Action has to be taken to stop the unacceptable treatment of these beautiful, graceful creatures.
We are supposed to be a nation of dog lovers - IF SO - we cannot stand by and IGNORE these barbaric facts

    YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

When your thinking about a new pet and visiting your rescue centre PLEASE take time to talk to the greyhounds and SERIOUSLY consider rehoming one.
You won’t regret it – once you have one – you’ll get hooked and will probably want another.

We wish to point out that not ALL greyhound racing owners inhumanely kill and badly abuse their dogs –
BUT, sadly thousands of owners do.
Thank you for taking the time to read this information.

A Greyhound’s Story

It wasn’t all that long ago I ran the dusty track for show, Devoted and driven my face pierced the wind as race after race I fought to contend.
Slow at the turn and lacking in grace I did what I could but I never placed.
I loved to run hard and hear the crowd roar, yet those cheers turned to boos when I didn’t score.
Folks lost their money when they bet on me, they tagged me a loser, said "Retire number three!!".
I had no idea what I was likely to find as I walked from the track for the very last time.
My person was writing, eyes teared and face so long. I sensed inside the sadness that this time I’d not go home.
I tried to change my person’s mind and wagged my mighty tail, but I knew deep down without a doubt, like racing I had failed.
We drove along the country roads till we came upon a town where erected off the main drag was a place known as the pound.
A pretty woman came outside and took me from my crate. My person signed the papers and with one look at my face
Said, "I’m sorry that I have to go and leave you here to sleep".

I felt my heart break into bits and walked with head bent low. I knew that it was over and I had no place to go.
Inside the dingy building I was checked and tagged and weighed, I heard the pretty woman state
"Don’t look him in the eye – He has that Greyhound Gaze that says, I do not want to die"
They put me in a kennel with the others on death row. I lay down on the concrete and moaned so soft and low.
Morning filtered through the glass, I stretched my weary bones. The pretty woman came to me and said "It’s time to go"
The hall was long and dark and cold, I did not cry or weep. I used my eyes and face and soul to halt eternal sleep.
She tried her best to use defence and look away from me, she seemed to know how wrong it was to do this deadly deed.
She bent down close and held my face against her silken cheek, the needle entered my front leg and quickly I felt weak.
I heard the pretty woman sob as she lay me on the floor. I saw the last glimpse of her face and then I saw no more.
I may not have been the fastest dog to ever run the track,
I just wish someone had loved me so I could have loved them back. Pat Graham.
