A Training Weekend with Janet Bates

On the 13th -14th February 1999 a training weekend was held at the Modern Sports Complex on the outskirts of Petersfield, Hampshire.

The weekend was well attended with over 20 dogs on the floor, 6 Australian Shepherds attended ranging from Ch classes to beginners all bred by Accra Aussies. German Shepherds, Goldies and Border Collies were in abundance and all worked cheerfully together.

Janet is the leading authority in training Australian Shepherds and is the only person in England who is working and being placed in the Ch classes in obedience. She is also working another younger dog in open class. She was also the first person to work an Australian Shepherd at Crufts with Accra Coffee Cobbler. Sue Gale who trains with Janet has also been honoured to work a 2 year old at Crufts last year called Accra Sharky Punch.

On both days the training was based on motivation either with a toy or food or both. This method of reward is the only way to teach a dog to being totally reliable and switched into their owners, under all conditions that we are competing under.

Many hours must be spent on teaching the dog to watch and to be totally correct on turns and presence. Janet not only teaches you these techniques but is totally committed to her pupils. She covered every aspect that was needed on both days in her group work and individual.

Retrieves, Recalls, Sendaways, Distant Control were a major part at the motivation and reward training and success was easily obtained without stressing any of the dogs.

However to train a dog successfully takes many hours of dedication and hard work to achieve a partnership of work and not to forget companionship as well.

Good trainers like Janet are a privilege to train with, and I know my own school that attended were very keen for the show season to start and to put into practise what was learnt.

Janet will be holding two more courses this year. One in August at my home in Cambridgeshire and another in November at Petersfield.
